Frequently asked questions

What ChartBase connects to, what it costs, and how sharing works. If your question is not here, the documentation goes deeper.

What is ChartBase?

ChartBase is a browser-based analytics workspace. You bring in data from a spreadsheet or a database, describe how your tables relate to each other, then build interactive dashboards on top of that model and share them as a link, an embed, or a PDF. There is nothing to install.

What data can I connect?

CSV and Excel (.xlsx) files by upload, and PostgreSQL or MySQL databases by direct connection. A workbook with several worksheets imports as one dataset per sheet. Database connections can be refreshed on a schedule, so a dashboard keeps up with the source without anyone re-uploading anything.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, and it does not expire. The Free plan covers 5 dashboards, 5 datasets, one database connection and 100 MB of storage, with no card required. Pro and Team both start with a free trial — the current length is shown on each plan at checkout.

Do I pay for people who only need to look at a dashboard?

No. Viewers are free and unlimited on every plan. You only pay for editors — the people who build and change dashboards. That is deliberate: a dashboard nobody can read is not worth building, so reading is never the thing we charge for.

How do I share a dashboard?

Three ways, and they answer different questions. Invite named people as viewers or editors; publish a link that anyone signed in can open, or one that is fully public; or embed the dashboard in your own site or portal. You can also export any page to PDF or Excel.

How is my data kept secure?

Database credentials are encrypted with AES-256-GCM and are only ever used to read — a read-only account is enough for everything ChartBase does. Dashboards are private until you share them, and on the Team plan you can add row-level security so two people opening the same dashboard see only the rows their group is allowed.

What is row-level security?

It filters the data itself rather than hiding a chart. You define groups, give each group rules about which rows it may read, and every query anyone runs is filtered by their group before results are returned. A regional manager opening the company dashboard sees their region and no other. It is available on Team and Enterprise.

Can I embed a dashboard in my own product?

Yes. Pro includes one embedded dashboard, and Team removes that limit. Embeds are metered by monthly load rather than by viewer, and your current allowance is shown on the billing screen. Team and Enterprise can also sign parameters into the embed token, so the embedding site decides which rows each of its own users sees.

What does the AI actually do?

Two specific jobs. It can generate a first draft of a dashboard from your real schema — reading your tables and picking charts that suit them — and it can write formulas from a plain-English description. Both run against your own data model, and both are available on every plan, including Free.

How much data can I load?

Single files up to 25 MB on Free and 100 MB on the paid plans, with total storage of 100 MB on Free, 2 GB on Pro and 10 GB on Team. Database connections are not bounded by file size in the same way — data is queried from the source rather than uploaded.

Do I need to know SQL?

No. Charts are built by dragging fields into wells, and relationships between tables are drawn on a canvas rather than written as joins. If you do want calculated fields, there is a formula language with a full function reference in the documentation — and the AI can write a first version of a formula for you.

Can I change or cancel my plan?

Yes, at any time, from the billing screen. Changing plans, updating a card, cancelling and downloading invoices all happen through our payment provider, so your card details are never stored by ChartBase.
