Slicers, text, images, shapes and buttons
The widgets that make a canvas a designed page rather than a grid of charts.
Not everything on the canvas is a chart.
Slicer
The reader's control for narrowing the page. Depending on the field it renders as a list, a search box or a range control. Slicers can be synced across pages so a selection persists as somebody navigates.
A slicer is the difference between a dashboard that answers your question and one that answers theirs.
Text
Headings, explanation, and the sentence that says what a page is for. The most under-used widget on any dashboard: a page that explains itself gets read; a page of unexplained charts gets an email asking what it means.
Image
A logo, an icon, a diagram. There is also a per-page background image for pages designed as a layout rather than a grid.
Shape
Rectangles and containers, used to group related visuals and give a page structure. Placed behind charts, they turn a scattering of boxes into sections.
Button
An action: navigate to another page, apply a bookmark, or open a link. Buttons plus bookmarks are how a dashboard becomes something you can walk somebody through rather than something they have to be told how to use.
